Coherence and Biofeedback Training

(what they are and why we all need them)

In states of anxiety, stress, depression or anger, the natural variation in cardiac rhythm becomes irregular and chaotic. When we are at peace and focused on our breathing the variability increases and begins to become what is known as coherent. In this state the natural heart rate variability aligns with our other biological rhythms, most notable our breathing...

In the state of coherence, when we breathe in, the heart rate increases and when we breathe out it decreases. The state of synchronization between breathe and heart rate variability is known in the medical literature as coherence.

Everyone Can Access Coherence: From my own clinical experience as well as from the literature on this phenomenon it is clear that everyone is capable of being trained to elicit this state of coherence. There are two major pathways to coherence:

  1. Biofeedback: One of the easiest ways we can be trained to enter this state is through the use of biofeedback equipment. With this equipment it is possible to actually see your body entering into this state of coherence in real time.
  2. Meditation: This state can also be achieved through the practice of meditation, or through the practice of progressive relaxation.

No matter how this state is achieved it has numerous positive benefits for each of us physiologically, emotionally and spiritually.
